Cars talk. A knock, a clunk, a hum that wasn't there last week — each one is a clue. The skill is matching the noise to the part, and knowing which ones mean 'book it in soon' versus 'stop driving'.
If there's one thing years in the workshop teaches you, it's that the big expensive failures almost always start as a small noise that got ignored. So when your car starts making a sound it didn't used to, that's worth paying attention to. Here's how to read the most common ones.
Knocking from the engine
A rhythmic knock from under the bonnet, especially one that gets louder when you accelerate or put the car under load, is one to take seriously. Common causes include low oil, worn engine bearings, or sometimes the wrong fuel (Car Owl). Engine knock under load can mean serious internal wear — keep driving and you risk turning a repair into a replacement. Check your oil level, and if the knock's still there, get it looked at.
Knocking or clunking over bumps
If the noise happens when you go over a pothole or speed bump — and Coventry has plenty — it's usually suspension. Worn shock absorbers, tired springs, drop links or ball joints all clunk over rough ground. It's not just a comfort thing; worn suspension affects handling and is a common MOT failure.
Clicking when you turn
A clicking or popping noise when turning at low speed, especially on full lock, is a classic sign of a worn CV joint — the joint that connects the driveshaft to the wheel. Front-wheel-drive cars are most affected. It won't fix itself and gets worse, so book it in before it lets go.
A hum that rises with speed
A droning hum that gets louder the faster you go, and sometimes changes pitch when you turn, is usually a worn wheel bearing. Replacement runs anywhere from around £150 to £400 per wheel depending on the car. Catch it early and it's a straightforward job.
Squealing or grinding when braking
Covered properly in our brake pad guide, but in short: a squeal means the pads are getting low; a grinding means they're gone and you're into the discs. The grinding one is a same-day job.
Stop driving and call us if you hear: heavy engine knocking under load, grinding from the brakes, loud bangs or pops, or any metal-on-metal sound. Those aren't "monitor it" noises — they mean something is failing.
Other noises worth a mention
- A lawnmower-like roar that gets louder with revs — often an exhaust leak from corrosion or a blown section
- Squealing on start-up that fades — frequently an auxiliary (serpentine) belt or pulley
- Crunching gears in a manual — worn clutch or synchromesh
- Ticking that speeds up with the engine — can be low oil or worn valve gear; worth checking the oil first
How we track noises down
Pinning down a noise is half the job. We'll often road-test the car, get it up on the ramps, and use proper inspection rather than guesswork — because the worst thing a garage can do is start replacing parts hoping one of them is the culprit. Diagnostics start from £55, and we tell you exactly what we found and what it'll take to fix.
Local Service Areas: We provide expert vehicle servicing, diagnostics, and repairs for drivers across the West Midlands. Whether you need a garage in Coventry, Solihull, Kenilworth, Berkswell, Meriden, or Balsall Common, our workshop is easily accessible.
