What drivers usually want to know
Navigating MOT Failure Lists
Receiving an MOT failure sheet can be daunting, but many failures are simpler to resolve than they look. We review your official VT30 failure sheet and outline exactly what is a legal must-fix, what is an advisory that can wait, and what is the most cost-effective path to a pass.

What you are actually paying for
What is included
Shorter page, clearer answers. These are the parts of the job most drivers care about before they book.
MOT failure inspection
We review your fail sheet, inspect every item, and separate must-fix from can-wait so you know exactly where you stand.
Priority-based quoting
Legal must-fix items are quoted first. Advisory items are explained honestly — what’s urgent, what can wait, and what’s fine for now.
Fast-track retest preparation
Repairs are completed and the vehicle prepared for retest, saving you time and reducing the risk of further failures.
General mechanical repairs
Clutch, gearbox, cooling system, exhaust, steering, and engine management work — not just MOT items.
The honest explanation
Failed Your MOT? Here’s What Happens Next
An MOT failure can feel stressful, but it does not have to be. Here is what happens when you bring your fail sheet to us.
First, we go through every failure and advisory item with you. We separate the items into three clear categories: legal must-fix (the car cannot pass without these), should-fix soon (not a legal requirement right now, but likely to fail next time or cause problems), and can safely wait (advisory items that are worth knowing about but do not need immediate attention).

Common questions before booking
Common MOT Failure Categories
Some types of MOT failure are more common than others. Here are the categories we repair most often, along with what typically needs doing.
- Brakes — worn pads, scored or corroded discs, seized callipers, binding handbrake, or low brake fluid. Brake faults are one of the top MOT failure reasons.
- Suspension — worn shock absorbers, broken springs, excessive play in ball joints or track rod ends, and perished bushes.
- Tyres — tread below the legal 1.6mm minimum, sidewall damage, incorrect size, or uneven wear indicating alignment issues.
- Lights and electrics — failed bulbs, dim or misaligned headlights, cracked lenses, or non-functioning indicators and brake lights.
- Exhaust and emissions — excessive emissions from a poorly running engine, catalytic converter faults, exhaust leaks, or damaged silencers.
- Steering — worn steering rack, power steering leaks, excessive play in the steering column, or damaged gaiters.
General Workshop Repairs
Not everything that goes wrong with a car is MOT-related. We also handle a wide range of general mechanical repairs for drivers across Coventry and the surrounding area.
Common non-MOT jobs include clutch replacement, gearbox repairs, cooling system work (radiators, thermostats, water pumps), exhaust repairs and replacement, engine management faults, and general wear-and-tear items like window regulators, door locks, and central locking.
If you are not sure whether your problem is something we handle, the easiest thing is to call or message us with a description. We will tell you honestly whether it is something we can help with and give you a rough idea of cost before you book in.
We Tell You What’s Urgent and What Can Wait
This is the part of our approach that drivers value most. After every inspection or MOT failure review, we split the work into clear priorities so you know exactly where your money is going.
Some garages treat every advisory as urgent. Others present a long list and leave you to figure out what matters. We do neither. We explain which items are safety-critical or legally required, which items are worth doing soon to avoid a bigger bill later, and which items are genuinely fine to leave for now.
That honesty is what keeps drivers coming back. We would rather do a smaller job today and earn your trust for the next ten years than inflate one bill and never see you again.

They are friendly, knowledgeable, and most important honest company. I took my car to them after being told by another local garage, that I needed my front calipers replacing, as well as discs and pads. They quoted £1100 + vat. Which is crazy for a 13 y/o kia. The Motor Medics checked the calipers are fine, discs and pads for nearly £1000 less. Great work and communications at all times. I cannot recommend them enough.

Very happy with the service. Their quote was £200 cheaper than the garage that did my MOT and they were able to do it far quicker. Very pleased and thankful

So happy with the service recently received from these three amazing guys. Having never heard of them (despite living nearby!) but reading excellent reviews on a local village facebook page, I decided to give them a go … and im just so glad i did! They diagnosed & fixed my poorly little cars multiple problems. A tiny glitch occurred not long after the major repairs, which they kindly sorted in minutes with no drama. Im so happy to have finally found a decent, trustworthy & professional mechanic, who i can rely on. Location and convenience of appointments also fits in with my work/life 🤩HIGHLY RECOMMEND🤩
FAQ
MOT Repair FAQs
Can I drive my car after an MOT failure?+
If your current MOT has expired, or if any of the failed items were classified as 'Dangerous', it is illegal to drive the vehicle on public roads. The only exception is driving directly to a pre-booked repair appointment.
How long do I have to get an MOT retest?+
If you leave the vehicle at the testing station for repair, or bring it back before the end of the next working day, the retest is free. If you bring it back within 10 working days, a partial retest fee applies. After 10 working days, a full test fee must be paid.
Do you charge for MOT retests?+
If we complete the MOT repairs at our workshop, we arrange or fast-track the official retest for you. Retests are free or charged at the minimum partial rate depending on DVSA guidelines.
