An MOT isn't a mystery and it isn't a stitch-up. It's a fixed list of safety checks — and once you know what's on that list, you can spot most problems before the tester ever does.
Plenty of drivers treat the MOT like a coin toss. It isn't. The tester works through a set list of items, and year after year the same handful of faults account for most of the failures. If you know what they are, you can sort them cheaply beforehand instead of getting that dreaded fail sheet.
We're based at Unit 1, Home Farm on Meriden Road in Coventry, and we do MOT repairs and retest prep day in, day out. Here's the honest breakdown.
What the test actually covers
The MOT is a roadworthiness and emissions check. Broadly, the tester looks at:
- Lights and signalling — headlights, indicators, brake lights, fog lights, number plate lights
- Brakes — pads, discs, calipers, handbrake and overall braking efficiency
- Tyres and wheels — tread depth, condition and security
- Steering and suspension — wear in shocks, springs, ball joints
- Visibility — windscreen chips, wipers, washers, mirrors
- Exhaust and emissions — including warning lights
- Structure and body — corrosion in the wrong places, sharp edges, secure panels
- Seatbelts, horn, registration plates
The faults that fail the most cars
Here's where it gets useful. Figures drawn from MOT data show failures cluster around the same areas every year (Car Owl):
| Area | Share of failures | Usually because… |
|---|---|---|
| Lights & signalling | ~19% | A blown bulb — a 5-minute, pennies fix |
| Suspension | ~13% | Worn shocks, springs or ball joints |
| Brakes | ~10% | Worn pads, discs or low fluid |
| Tyres | ~8% | Tread below the 1.6mm legal limit |
| Visibility | ~7% | Cracked screen, worn wipers, empty washer bottle |
The eye-opener is the top one. The single most common reason cars fail is a dead bulb — something you could check in your driveway in five minutes.
The instant fail nobody expects: if your engine management light is on, the car fails on the spot. The tester won't even start the emissions test with a warning light glowing (MOT guidance). Get any dash lights diagnosed before the test.
A five-minute pre-MOT check anyone can do
- Walk round the car and test every light — headlights, indicators, brakes (get someone to watch), fogs, number plate lights.
- Do the 20p test on your tyres (more on that in our tyre tread guide).
- Check the windscreen for chips in the driver's line of sight.
- Top up the washer fluid and check the wipers clear cleanly.
- Start up and check for any warning lights staying on.
Sort those and you've eliminated the bulk of common failures before you even book in.
