Interim or full? It's one of the most common questions we get at the workshop. The honest answer depends on your mileage, how you drive, and when you last had the car looked at properly.
Servicing is the bit of car ownership that's easy to put off. Nothing's broken, the car drives fine, so why spend the money? The reason is simple: engines don't fail overnight, they fail from neglect. A funny noise, a light on the dash, a service that slips to "next month" — that's how small jobs turn into four-figure bills.
So let's clear up the interim-versus-full question once and for all.
What's an interim service?
An interim service is the lighter, more frequent one — designed for in-between the big annual service. It's about catching problems early and keeping the essentials fresh. Typically it covers (industry standard):
- Engine oil and oil filter change
- Top-up of key fluids — washer, brake, coolant
- Visual checks of brakes, tyres, lights and steering
- A basic fault-code check
We recommend it roughly every 6 months or 6,000 miles. Ours start from £99.
What's a full service?
A full service is the thorough annual once-over. It includes everything in the interim, plus a lot more depth — often 50 to 80 individual checks:
- Air and cabin filters replaced (not just inspected)
- Full brake inspection with measurements, not just a visual
- All essential fluids checked and topped up
- A full diagnostic sweep and report
- Detailed steering, suspension and exhaust checks
- Spark plugs (petrol) or fuel filter checks (diesel) where due
We recommend it every 12 months or 12,000 miles. Ours start from £149.
The difference at a glance
| Feature | Interim (from £99) | Full (from £149) |
|---|---|---|
| Recommended interval | 6 months / 6,000 miles | 12 months / 12,000 miles |
| Oil & filter | Included (OE-spec) | Included (OE-spec) |
| Brake check | Visual | Full inspection & measurement |
| Cabin & air filters | Inspected | Replaced |
| Fluids | Coolant & washer | All essential fluids |
| Diagnostics | Basic fault check | Full diagnostic sweep & report |
The simple rule: high mileage or older car? Get a full service yearly with an interim in between. Low mileage and newer? An annual service is usually plenty. When in doubt, ask — we'll point you to the cheaper option if that's genuinely what you need.
Which should you choose?
If you cover a lot of miles around Coventry and Warwickshire — long commutes, motorway runs, plenty of town driving — your oil works harder and an interim service every six months pays for itself. If you potter about locally and do low annual mileage, one good full service a year is usually all you need.
One thing worth knowing: regular servicing protects your warranty and your resale value. A car with a full, stamped service history sells for more and holds buyers' confidence. Skip a £99 service today and you risk a £1,000-plus repair tomorrow — and a thinner offer when you come to sell.
